Perfect Bound Books

A perfect bound book is a type of binding commonly used for paperback books, magazines, catalogs, and thicker printed materials.

In perfect binding, the pages and cover are glued together at the spine with a strong, flexible adhesive. The other three sides of the book are then trimmed to give it clean, "perfect" edges, resulting in a sleek, professional appearance.

The process involves gathering the individual pages, which are typically stacked in a single block. The spine of this block is then roughened to allow better adhesion, and the cover, which is usually made from a heavier cardstock, is wrapped around and glued to the spine.

This method of binding is popular because it is cost-effective for producing large quantities and allows for easy printing on the spine, making it ideal for retail and bookshelf display. However, unlike sewn bindings, perfect bound books do not lay flat when opened.

Supplying artwork for a perfect bound book

IMPORTANT
COVER PAGES (front, inside front, inside back and back) and INTERNAL PAGES must be supplied as two separate PDF files.

COVER SPECIFICATIONS

  • Supply as a two-page spread
  • Ensure 3mm bleed and AT LEAST a 3mm safe space
  • Ensure correct spine width

Because of variances created during the printing/binding process we recommend that you extend your front cover design across the spine width. We do not recommend placing text along the spine, particularly on narrow spine widths.

INTERNAL PAGES SPECIFICATION

  • Supply as 1-up multiple page PDF file
  • Ensure 3mm bleed and AT LEAST 3mm safe space

MARGINS: We recommend allowing extra space on the binding edge so that text and graphics are not obscured this should also be taken into account when placing elements across page spreads.

Please note: There can be a 1-2mm tolerance in the folding, binding and gluing processes.

BLEED

Artwork supplied without bleed cannot be used and will need to be re-supplied with bleed added.

WHAT IS BLEED
Bleed is a 3mm margin added to each edge of the final printed size of your job.

All background images, colours, patterns and artwork elements which extend to the trim edge must also extend to the external bleed edge.

WHY IS BLEED IMPORTANT
A bleed margin is required so that cards don't have white edges after trimming.

SAFE ZONE

With the exception of elements that need to extend out to the bleed edge (see above) important content, text, logos etc should not be placed too close to the trim edge.

We recommend that a greater than 3mm 'safe zone' margin be applied to your art.

IMAGE RESOLUTION (Quality)

Make sure that all images and rasterized text are 300dpi and placed at 100% so that they won't look blurry or pixilated when printed.

Solid blacks should be 'Rich Black' 40%C, 40%M, 40%Y, 100%Black.

SAVING YOUR FILES

Don't flatten your layers or image before saving - doing so will reduce your print quality.

Save your art as a 'Press Quality' PDF. Ensure that bleed is enabled under your pdf settings.
